Kitchenettes are more cost effective then a full kitchen, and provide the necessary elements such as counter space and some cabinetry for storage, dishwashers, microwaves, a sink, and a small refrigerator. These are a perfect solution if you are including a guest room or even for a in-law suite. Building code regulations are less strict when items such as ovens and stoves are excluded.
Kitchenette or Kitchen?
If you are including this as part of an in-law suite, and those living in the in-law suite are self sufficient, then you may want to consider a full kitchen which will allow for privacy and independence.
If the basement remodel is primarily for the use of children then you may want to stick with a kitchenette for safety reasons.
If the basement directly connects to an outdoor space, such as a pool, hot tub, or a patio, and you entertain often, you may want a full size kitchen for food preparation and cooking reasons.
