Basement Bedrooms are an excellent way to add an extra child’s bedroom or guest room to your home, without going through the home addition process.
Bedroom Considerations:
– Most building codes will require an egress window in the bedroom…and to be honest you really need on there for safety reasons!
– Bathrooms are usually always included when a bedroom is but not everyone includes a full bathroom. Many still want their children to shower in another bathroom, however if you are intending this to act as a guest bedroom, it is a good idea to include a shower.
In-law suites constructed in the basement have become a very popular option within that past few years. This allows for a very cost effective alternative to keep parents and in-laws close and safe.
In-law suite considerations:
– Having an entrance/exit to and from the basement allows extended privacy for everyone
– The full size bathroom included with the in-law suite usually connects to the bedroom through a door. It is also an good idea, if space allows, to have another entrance from the rest of the basement remodel. That way if you are entertaining you can essentially close off the bedroom but still allow your guests to use the bathroom. This set-up is often referred to as a Jack & Jill bathroom.
